What is Chiropractic?
By Dr. Darin Burdman

Chiropractic starts with the examination of the spinal column for locating fine misalignments of the spinal bones, (vertebral subluxations). Subluxations cause interference of the nerve flow-“life force” Chiropractors work primarily on removing vertebral subluxations. A subluxation is a small misalignment of a spinal bone with the one above it or the one below it. Any physical, chemical or emotional stress which is greater than the bodies own resistance will cause a subluxation to occur.

The brain and nervous system controls and balances all the tissues of the body. Correcting subluxations minimizes or reduces interferences of the nervous system. The chiropractor locates and corrects subluxations thereby assisting in and optimizing the natural healing abilities of the body.

The Adjustment

An adjustment is the correction of a vertebral subluxation. The chiropractor uses engineering, physics and mechanics to gently correct vertebral subluxations. A main rule in straight chiropractic is “Less is More and More is Less” The chiropractor will not adjust every bone in your body but address the mechanical deficiency. He will adjust the right subluxations and leave the others alone. Knowing when not to adjust is an art that only comes with experience.

The Chiropractor

The chiropractor studies body mechanics (Biomechanics, how the body works)
He respects the human body by introducing as little change as possible to the body. He allows the body to respond and heal. Straight chiropractic is a truly natural health care profession. The straight chiropractor leaves diagnosis to the medical doctors, physical therapy to the physical therapists and nutritional advice to the nutritionist. He respects their hard work and will not mix in to other areas of healing, by doing this he can specialize on the practice and art of chiropractic and be the best he can be in his specialization. Chiropractic is the only health care profession that seeks to specifically locate and correct vertebral subluxations.

Causes of Subluxations

Physical Stress can range from whiplash trauma to sitting at your desk day after day with your head turned or bent in the same way. The birth process itself is physically traumatic to the baby. The doctor can exert 40 to 60 pounds of force on the infant’s spine. If he uses forceps their can even be small imperceptible damage that may take years to manifest. A child can be symptom free for years until one day (possibly even when he is an adult) he has pain. The chiropractor can relate this pain to an incident that occurred 10, 20, 30 or even more years before.

Chemical Stress is anything from eating too much sugar and preservatives to breathing environmental pollutants. These substances upset the body’s chemistry, which disrupts the muscles’ and ligaments’ tone, resulting in subluxations.

Mental Stress is something everyone has experienced in either tense or emotional situations, or in everyday living. Mental stress causes the ligaments and muscles to tighten resulting in subluxations. These types of subluxations cause the breakdown of the healthy cells. This is the root of disease. Anyone who already has a disease or is on medication can also benefit greatly from chiropractic by being subluxation free.
With gentle adjusting techniques, the chiropractor removes the subluxations that slow the natural healing process.

Symptoms

A symptom is a warning signal sent to the brain from the body telling that damage has already occurred. Pain is the most common symptom. Symptoms such as burning, tingling, or numbness can also occur. The symptom threshold is different for everyone. Therefore, some people may not feel a symptom until there is extensive damage. The chiropractor although cares about the patients suffering. Focuses on the cause the vertebral subluxation. When he removes them the patient can then heal in a truly natural way. Seeing a chiropractor to have your spine checked for subluxations you might avoid symptoms altogether.
