Can chiropractic help this?
In the last 19 plus years as a doctor of
chiropractic, I have heard this question hundreds of times. I usually avoid
the issue and stick to talking about the spine and treating the subluxations.
The time has finally come. I will delve into these issues. Hopefully I will
be able to stay in the boundaries of (pure) chiropractic. I do not mix in other
areas of healthcare.
The debate of treating internal organ problems with chiropractic is a hot one.
It is why the chiropractic profession has 2 branches: one that desires to be
independent treating the mechanics of the body and not disease. The other branch
of Chiropractic chooses to mix into other discipline like physical therapy,
pediatrics, immunology, allergies, etc. There is a well known report (in professional
circles) that is published every 2 months by David Chapman Smith. It is a compendium
of research published in referenced journals of chiropractic. This report called
“The Chiropractic Report” has published studies of the treatment
of visceral diseases with chiropractic and its efficacy. I would like to address
this from a different point of view.
Is the disease of mechanical origin or will a mechanical approach to healing help resolve the problem?
Regarding colic a study was done in Denmark by the National Health System. One
hundred colicky infants with a specific definition of colic, meaning 3 or more
hours of crying per day for 3 days to 3 weeks in length.
The end result was that the infant who received specific chiropractic treatment
to the spine had less than half the episodes of colic. The question that arises
is NOT, Should I go to a chiropractor? Rather is the colic due to a musculoskeletal
imbalance or a vertebral subluxation causing tightness in the muscular organ
of the alimentary tract? The study is promising for benefit in the disorder.
This is really new ground for chiropractic and it is vital to approach the topics
with a steady chiropractic approach. This approach does not make fanciful claims
or guarantees. It simply looks at the body from a different perspective, a mechanical
one. Based on the Denmark study we find that using chiropractic to localize
and remove vertebral subluxations will truly bring the world to a higher level
of good health. Based on our bodies own mechanics.
